Market Update

Good morning! Hope you’re keeping warm on this chilly morning. 70 degree temps one day and 29 the next. Kinda crazy even though we knew well in advance it was going to happen.

After a couple weeks break from Farmers Markets, J.D. Hudson Farms is back up and running and his products are available through the online market. I’m re-sending the product listing with this newsletter.

There is still plenty of time to place an order for pick up on Saturday morning.

Have a great week!

~ Stacy

With the impending extreme cold weather we are going to be experiencing this week, Tom, of Opossum Hollow Produce, feels it is best not to list any inventory on the market and market management supports that decision. Even though the produce is growing in a high tunnel and will also be under row covers, it is difficult to determine what the harvest will be. However, he will be present at the online market pick up Saturday with whatever he has been able to harvest and you will have the option to purchase produce when you pick up your order. I may be able to send out an update Friday with a list of what he was able to harvest. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in your planning for the week. Thank you in advance for understanding.

If you have some kale from Opossum Hollow Produce here is a recipe for some nourishing soup that will help keep you warm this week:

INGREDIENTS

4 strips bacon, 4 ounces, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1/2 pound kale, thick stems removed, leaves finely chopped (about 8 cups)

4 cups Acorn Squash Puree, or 2 packages (12 ounces each) frozen winter squash puree, thawed
Coarse salt and ground pepper

DIRECTIONS

Cook bacon in a large saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate; set aside.
Add onion to fat in pan, and cook until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add kale; cook until soft, 3 to 4 minutes.
Add squash puree and 3 cups water (or more if necessary to achieve desired consistency); bring just to a boil. Season generously with salt and pepper. Serve, garnished with reserved bacon.

Keep warm this week and we’ll see you Saturday!

We had a very successful opening week for the Winter Market! Thank you to all who placed an order and found us at our new pick up location.

If you have unused Double Dollar script remember you can use it towards orders through the online market. If you know someone who has any left please remind them they can still use it.

Enjoy perusing the items available this week. It’s time to begin planning your Thanksgiving meal! Hard to believe the year is almost over.

Have a blessed week!

Just Added a New Vendor!!!

If you came by the market you may have met Sarah Martin, owner of Roca Baby! Candy Company. Sarah has decided to join our online market this winter and should have her products listed and ready to order this week!

We are excited to have her on board.

Winter Market Officially Opens Today!

We ended the open air market season with the most beautiful, sunny, warm weather I’ve ever recalled experiencing in October. A group of us went to 28 Springs for lunch afterwards and we all commented about how we had the best weather for the open air market this season. All are thankful for new vendors, old and new customers and support from 28 Springs, Inn at the Springs, Fratelli’s Pizza and Cafe on Broadway.

We are truly excited about entering into our 2nd season with the online market. Being able to bring fresh produce, pastured meats, farm fresh eggs, baked goods, crafts and live plants to our community throughout the fall and winter months is amazing! We have great people working hard to bring locally grown, locally made items to you!

Those participating this season are:

Create 4 Good – Melissa Null

East Side Acres – Astrid Soto

Greener Pastures Products – Mica Parks

J.D. Hudson Farms – Jerry Hudson

Opossum Hollow Produce – Thomas Fairbanks

Patty’s Pantry – Patty Gambill

Perennial Gardens – Shelly Koski

R Family Farm – Roger and Jennifer Remington

Skopp Bakery – Rikki Skopp and family

Susi’s Kitchen – Susi Gilbert

The Bread Basket – Brenda Welch

You can still place an order online Sunday through Wednesday at 5 p.m. Pick up will be on Saturday morning, 9 to 11:00 a.m. at the Main Street Siloam Springs office, located at 103 E Alpine St, Ste 2, Siloam Springs, AR. The parking lot is not available for parking – please park on the street. Market management feels there should be plenty of street parking at that time of morning. If you require assistance carrying your purchase to the car we will most definitely help you.

When you click the market tab it will open up the market with all products listed in alphabetical order. However, on the left side is a category listing and you can click on the categories you would like to shop in and some categories will have sub-categories as well. For example, Bath and Beauty is where all the handmade soaps, lotions, laundry soaps, etc. are listed. Clicking Processed Foods will open up the listing of jams and jellies and categories of other products that we hope someday to be able to find a vendor that is permitted to make those foods.

There are 12 different types of produce listed, 10 herbs, honey, a wide variety of pastured beef, pork, poultry and sometimes goat meat, tasty baked goods, wonderful homemade jams and jellies and handmade crafts, soaps, and personal care products.

We look forward to seeing everyone through the winter! Remember, don’t hesitate to ask one of our farmers, bakers, crafters about something you would like to see sold or if you have a special request. You can access their email address by clicking the Our Growers tab. They welcome your ideas and requests.

See you Saturday morning!
