Online Market is Open!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

This week our Farmers Market Steering Committee will begin planning for our 2018 market season! We’ve received lots of great applications and are excited to be able to continue the Power of Produce Club for our market kids. This year the programming is going to be amazing and we will soon begin sharing some of that information with our market families.

Opossum Hollow Produce is taking a week off to do some work on the farm. They are focusing on water conservation and collecting and storing rain water. R Family Farm will be having a different sale each week as they begin clearing their freezers to get ready for the new market season. Arkansabi Farms is prepping the farm for the season and has some spring crops in the ground. Rainbow’s Produce is protecting the yearly strawberry crop and getting their seeds started.

Don’t forget to vote for Siloam Springs in the Small Business Revolution contest for the opportunity for our community to win $500,000 that will be invested in small businesses! You can vote today and tomorrow at smallbusinessrevolution.org

Enjoy your week and see you Saturday!

It was so nice to see the sun shining this morning! Thankful for a day of warmer weather.

There is lettuce available again this week! Get your order in fast along with all the other items you need for this weeks menus.

So many of you have asked about using a card to pay for your order. Now you can now pay by debit or credit card at the time you place your order. You will notice an option to add a card. The information is provided to the payment processor and we will not have access to your card information. You can add and remove a card at any time. Your payment will be processed on Saturday after your order is picked up. This will ensure any changes to your order can be made before you pay. We’ve had two customers use this already and the transaction was smooth. There is a 3% convenience charge to use this service, which is what we are charged to offer the service.

For those of you who follow us on Facebook you may already know that Siloam Springs is in the running to be featured on a show aired on Hulu called the Small Business Revolution – Main Street. Sponsored by Deluxe Corporation, the winning community would receive $500,000 that would be invested in their downtown community. Currently, we are in the top 10 and tomorrow morning, bright and early, they are announcing the top 5 towns at 6:30 central time, LIVE on Facebook.

Once the top 5 are announced a week long voting process will begin. If we make the top 5 we will need your votes! You can vote once per day per email account. I will send out an additional newsletter tomorrow with the link to the voting site.

Thank you for shopping local and supporting all local businesses!

It has been so nice to have fresh lettuce available for the past two weeks. Cabbage is on the way and I’m hoping for spinach and kale too.

Opossum Hollow Produce has started their flower seeds as well. They will go into the ground soon and we will have beautiful flowers available at the market this spring.

R Family Farm still has chicken available as well as pastured pork, grass fed beef, and pet food.

Payne Farm and R Family Farm have kept us well supplied with eggs this winter.

There is honey, all natural products for your home, knitted and crocheted kitchen items, and Lefse. Don’t forget to check out the amazing locally roasted coffee from Bad Dog Beanery!

Enjoy shopping this week and see you Saturday!

Apologies for forgetting to open the market this morning. I recall my reminder alarm going off, but must have gotten distracted. My only excuse is Monday is my day off.

There are 2 types of lettuce available from Opossum Hollow Produce again this week.

Thank you for supporting our local farmers, bakers, and makers year round.

See you Saturday!

Wow, what a week. Winter temps in the single digits, then spring temps and thunderstorms, and now back to mild winter temps. I’m sure the farmers are very happy it rained yesterday.

Produce report: Opossum Hollow Produce broke new ground this weekend while the temps were warmer. Tom and Cheryl are expanding their garden area.

In other news, R Family Farm just put 150 Americana chicks in their brooders. Spring will bring beautiful colored eggs. There is something special about going out to the nest box and finding colored eggs mixed in with the brown eggs.

The market is preparing for the new season. Opening day will be April 14th and it will also be our 1st Kids Day of the year. Power of Produce club returns with new programming that we are certain the kids will LOVE! Tastings will continue with the Two Bite Club, and members of the club will receive $2 to spend with the farmers. We are so thankful to the area businesses that sponsor our market – Cobb Vantress, Simmons, Community Physicians Group, Sager Creek Pediatric Clinic, Dr. Kyle Dixon, and Simmons Bank.

We are also very thankful for our customers who faithfully support our local farmers, makers, and bakers. We couldn’t do this without you!

Enjoy shopping this week and see you Saturday!

Time for Soups and Stews! Online Market is Open!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

Since we continue to experience colder than we’re use to temperatures this winter, it’s time to warm up with homemade soups and stews made from scratch with pastured and grass fed meats and bone broth. Not only will this warm you up but it will fill your body with good, healthy nutrients that will boost your immune system and help fight off colds and flu.

Grandma’s Chicken Noodle Soup

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour, 10 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 25 minutes

Ingredients

3 Tablespoons pastured butter
1 Cup onion, diced
1/2 Cup garlic, minced
1/2 Inch ginger root grated or finely sliced
1 Cup carrots, diced
2 Cups potatoes, diced
1/2 Cup celery, diced
4 Cooked chicken breasts, diced or shredded
8 Cups homemade chicken broth
1 Handful fresh parsley – chopped
1 Teaspoon sage
1 Teaspoon rosemary
1 Teaspoon thyme
1 Tablespoon unrefined salt
2 Cups healthy noodles of choice – we usually use einkorn noodles.

Instructions

Saute all vegetables in butter in large stock pot until soft (6-7 minutes).
Add all ingredients to pot except noodles and chicken.
Simmer for 1 hour over low heat.
While the soup starts simmering, boil your chicken breasts. Shred or dice when cooked and add to pot.
Add noodles and cook until done (5-10 minutes).

Notes

You can tweak this recipe to your liking and add other veggies and herbs. You can save soup in freezer as well.

Produce progress report – things are growing at a very slow rate due to cold temperatures. Opossum Hollow and Arkansabi Farms both have greens planted and growing. Warmer temps and more sunlight will help get more veggies ready for the market. We really appreciate their efforts to grow year round for our market.

Just a reminder to stock up on chicken so you have plenty in the freezer until R Family begins raising their spring birds.

We appreciate our customers continued support of our local farmers/vendors. Have a great week and see you Saturday!

Time to stock up on Pastured Chicken! Online Market is Open!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

R Family Farm chicken is selling quickly. This is the last of the chicken until Spring so be sure to stock up while you can. Bone broth is great to have year round, but especially good during the winter with all the colds and flu going around.

You can purchase honey, farm fresh eggs,Lefse, beautifully knitted/crocheted kitchen items, and all natural products for personal and home use.

What is Lefse you ask? Lefse is a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread. It is made with potatoes, flour, butter, and milk or cream. It is similar to a tortilla, maybe a bit larger. You can use it as a wrap for sandwiches, breakfast burritos, or slathered with butter and honey.

Enjoy the warmer temps this week as it looks like we will be experiencing cold temps again by Friday.

Have a great week and see you Saturday!

Happy New Year! Market is Open!

The New Year came in with a cold front and it was 4 degrees at my house this morning. Our neighbor’s water froze. We are thankful ours did not. Keep the water dripping this week.

R Family Farm stocked up the chicken this week so you should stock up too as this is the last of it until spring.

Unfortunately produce isn’t going to grow well with these cold temps so it may be a few weeks before it’s back online.

Best wishes on 2018! See you Saturday!

~Stacy
